JUST when you thought the most cultured aspect of Marbella was a cut-price English breakfast, it has emerged that the tourist haven has a hidden Roman past.

An archaeological dig has found the remains of a statue, road plan and a stone arrangement that suggests the old town was once a thriving Roman settlement.

Ciliana – the group dedicated to the investigation and exploration of Marbella’s history – has called for all roadworks in the area to be delayed while they carry out further explorations.

“This town has more surprises,” explained Ciliana spokesman Catalina Urbaneja.

“This town has more surprises.”

Additional investigations however, are likely to be delayed until the area’s pipe-laying works are completed.
Although Roman remains have been found across Malaga province, the findings are the first for the town.

Toro excrement! there have been roman discoveries made in Marbella since the 1980’s, most of which have been shushed-up. For instance, middle of the 90’s there was an Urgent Excavation undertaken next to the Town Hall (this type of excavation is done just in case anything is found) because of impending building work to be carried out. And Low and Behold! A roman sarcophagus with a noble-woman’s remains appeared! What do you think happened? Gil’s local government tried to censor the find so that building work wouldn’t be put on hold. Marbella in the past 30 years has destroyed some of the best archaelogy on the Coast for, paradoxicaly, Tourism!
