A LITTLE-known Britain has completed a shock golf victory at the Madrid Masters.

Ross McGowan, 27, held his nerve during the final round to register a three-shot victory at the tournament ahead of Spanish stars Sergio Garcia and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

McGowan – the 2006 English Amateur Champion – began the final day with a seven-shot lead, but endured a few testing holes before recording his landmark win.

“I came here this week in form and it’s lovely to come away with the trophy,” said McGowan, from Surrey.

“I came here this week in form and it’s lovely to come away with the trophy,” said McGowan, from Surrey.

“It means a lot to win – that’s another goal out of the way and hopefully from here I can progress and move on to bigger things.”

McGowan finished only four shots away from equalling Ernie Els’ all-time course record at the Centro Nacional and has now set his sights on earning a place in next year’s Ryder Cup team.
