Mass graves to be excavated in Ronda
November 17, 2009 • Andalucia, Lead2, Malaga • 0 Comments
FAMILIES of victims buried in 19 mass graves in the Serrania de Ronda have demanded their excavation.
More than 1,700 people are believed to have been buried in the graves in the San Lorenzo cemetery in Ronda.
The newly created Association for the Historical Memory in the Serrania, has applied to exhume the bodies buried there during the civil war.
The numbers in the mass graves, the majority of whom were shot by General Franco’s troops, could be even higher than initial estimates.
Those killed were trying to defend Ronda from Franco’s regime and were taken prisoner by his troops when the city was taken.
