A campo fire broke out Tuesday night in Estepona, causing the evacuation of 200 area residents.

Though Mayor David Valadez says their homes were not in imminent danger, National Police wanted to take all precautions just in case the fire expanded.

The four-hour blaze began near the Puerto Romano urbanisation along the Rio Padrón and affected about 20 hectares of scrub and mountain low land.

In total over 200 emergency services personnel helped quench the blaze, along with four fire-fighting helicopters, two fire-fighting airplanes, and five fire engines.

Experts had put Andalucia on ‘red alert’ for forest fires in June.

The area’s wet winter caused unprecedented growth of weeds, grasses, and bushes, which are now drying out and posing a fire threat this summer.
