All square at triangular rugby tournament

THE “Wild Boars” of Axarquia Rugby Club Colts U17 team welcomed the rugby clubs of Cordoba and Motril to a triangular tournament at the Fernando Hierro stadium in Velez-Malaga on Saturday 19 May 2012.

A great festival of rugby was played out in front of an enthusiastic crowd of supporters and family in very windy and difficult conditions.

The first game between Cordoba and the hosts, Axarquia Rugby, was ferocious from the outset with some great dominant forward play from the visitors, Cordoba. Whilst Axarquia scored first, through a well worked backs move, resulting in the Axarquia outside centre scoring a great try, Cordoba started to take control and possession through their well-drilled and larger forwards. During a hard fought game, Cordoba scored three forward tries, with Axarquia scoring late on with another try from the back line, the final result being a 10-15 win to the visitors.

In the second game, Cordoba then faced the larger squad from Motril and, perhaps, owing to some fatigue from their first game, they were overpowered and capitulated to a 29-0 loss with Motril scoring five impressive tries

In the final game, with both teams knowing that victory was essential, the “Wild Boars” from Axarquia Rugby Club performed outstandingly to claim victory with a 12-6 scoreline, scoring two great tries and which could have, and should have, been a greater margin of victory had they converted some of their opportunities.

So all 3 teams recorded one win and one loss each in the triangular tournament and with each team level, all square, on points, the winners by virtue of the 5 tries they scored Motril Rugby claimed first place, with Axarquia Rugby in second place with four tries, and Cordoba in third place with three tries.

All the teams, players, coaches and supporters would like to express their thanks to the referee,  WILLIAM 10, for the great way he refereed all of the games

Next weekend, on the 26 May, a triangular tournament featuring Malaga Rugby Club, Axarquia 1st XV and a joint Axarquia Veterans/Junior XV will pitch battle for the last games of the 2011/2012 season. Everyone is welcome to attend and come and support this great Rugby Club of Axarquia.
