CATALUNA’S president claims the region would be the 12th richest country in the EU if it were to gain independence from Spain.

Speaking in an interview with the New York Times, Artur Mas vowed to continue the fight for an independent Cataluna regardless of the result of regional elections on November 25.

The region has 7.5 million residents and a €260 billion economy – equal to Portugal – with Mas calling for a referendum to be held on the issue of independence.
