GARY Lineker has paid for a private jet to fly his sick mum from Spain to Britain for treatment.

The Match of the Day host grew concerned for mum Margaret, 73, who now lives in Spain.

She had been hooked up to a drip in Tarragona Hospital near Barcelona after becoming ill.

The ex-footballer, preferring that she was cared for in the UK, paid for a private jet to take her and his brother Wayne, who owns a bar in Marbella, to a UK hospital.

A source close to Gary, 52, said: “He couldn’t bear to think of his mum in a foreign hospital when he can afford luxury healthcare here.”

  1. I can understand it from a proximity point of view, but I am about to return to the UK with my elderly mother and one of the aspects about this adventure that concerns me most is that she might not receive good treatment at the hands of the British NHS. The Spanish health system is not what it used to be, but from what I have heard it still beats the British one!

  2. I hope she gets the quality hospital treatment in the UK that her son hopes for. But when you read the recent UK press about the UK hospitals scandalous maltreatment of patients, and how many UK doctors are taken off the Doctors Registry (2/3 Indian)drastic shortage of UK registered nurses so they must import them from Portugal, long delays for treatment, large Settlements being paid out by Hospitals to families of patients who were poorly treated – or needlessly died (one had 1200 needless deaths in 3 years), etc you wonder WHERE the quality medical care is?!
If it’s “in” the UK, why are UK patients flocking to Spain?

  3. “Flocking to Spain” Really? Be assured, if you PAY in the U.K. you’ll be O.K. Just try not to be one of those pathetic beggars who requires N.H.S. treatment.

  4. Stefanjo, I am one of those pathetic beggars who received NHS treatment after having a brain haemoraghe and stroke. The care I received at Kings College Hospital London seven years ago was second to none, Thank you so much NHS, for saving my life.

  5. Rita: “Seven years ago” says it all. My comment concerns the present state and the vertiginous descent of the N.H.S. at the hands of the “Posh Boys” who are now in charge. “Pathetic beggars” refers to the way myself and friends have been made to feel recently, when accessing N.H.S. services.
Live long and prosper Rita. God Bless.
