Cyclists face fines in Malaga

Cyclist
The temperature was reported as 40 degrees

MALAGA police have fined 77 cyclists this year for endangering pedestrians.

Almost half of the sanctions are due to speeding, while the rest are for driving with headphones, talking on the phone or not respecting the traffic lights

Cyclists can receive fines of up to 200 euros, with 60 being about average.

  1. About bloody time. They seem to think they dont have to obey road-laws, restrictions or commands. Now, make them all have insurance & maybe ITV’s aswell > just like the more responsible road users (well, them that pay for that anyhow !). Should also make riding side by side an offence, as well as undercutting traffic in tail-backs, which causes many accidents……(& yes, I also have a bike, but I never do as these idiots do, as I think it dis-respectful to all of the orher road-users).

  2. Speeding? On a pushbike? These guys are good! This is typical anti-bike nonsense by smug, selfish car/wagon drivers. When cyclists are being smeared across roads by careless drivers, they need to cycle two abreast to take the same space as a car in order to be seen. All of our cities should wake up to the value of cycling and do as the Netherlands does. Give cyclists separate lanes and crucially, make drivers automatically in the wrong in collisions.
DRIVING with headphones? Shouldn’t that be cycling? What about car drivers with their mobile discos blaring? They are no more aware of their surroundings either. As for mobile phones… If every driver was nicked for that, Spain would cease to be broke. Instead of persecuting cyclists, the powers that be ought to be encouraging them. The more people on two wheels, the less there are heating up our world.

  3. Fining cyclists would be just crazy (unless someone is actually caught running over some babies by mistake). Aren’t most police in the cooler bars all daytime lately. Best way at the moment. Phewee just off to place an icepack over my face.

  4. You get the same responce from cyclists every time you mention this > But, they cause so many accidents by their sheer stupidity. The rules of the road are there for all road users & should never be ignored > even by these people who use the roads for free, never having had any training, never having to get a licence, never having to pay insurance & never having to pass tests to ensure their cycles are road-worthy. I have helped clear up the mess caused by cyclists on the roads – they are always badly injured but always so certain that it wasnt their fault in any way > but the norm is that they either caused the accident themselves or made it virtually impossible for other road-users to avoid them. If you want to have the same rights on the road as other users > then pay for the required fees, insurances & licences > then perhaps your opinions may have more merit than the current free-loading un-licenced un-insured & mostly un-road-worthy people that they currently are :)

  5. Car (and truck) drivers should pay 100% for all road maintanence. And shut the hell up about others, pedestrians, cyclists, scooters, etc, from using it.
If car drivers want 80% of all roadwidth, and hundreds of miles compared to a pedestrians dozen or so, then they should pay for it proportionately – 100% or more!
If you really want people to pay fairly, for what they use, you know your bills will go up drastically.

However in my neck of the woods, we have roads with pavement, then bike lane, then parking lane, then traffic lane (and repeated in the opposite direction). And the streets are always full of sporty types. IN THE GODDAMN TRAFFIC LANE !! Bikes and now joggers in the F-in traffic.
I wish the police would do something about these annoying ‘tards. they give the rest of us a bad name, make me angry when driving, and cause problems. But the police do nothing!?!?!?!

  6. Pedestrians dont use roads > hence no need for licences, tax´s, ITV´s etc.
Scooters use roads, but they pay tax, have licences & have ITV´s on their vehicles.
Car & truck drivers pay tax´s, have licences & ITV´s on their vehicles.
Cyclists pay no tax, have no licence, no ITV´s & do all of the grumbling & moaning > & they also ignor the road laws that everyone else have to obey (why !, are they exempt – I think not).
The Spanish Police should be applauded for starting to fine these annoying ´tards´ > just have to hope this is just the start of a widening policy against these free-loading traffic-obstacles !

  7. I’ve got mixed feelings about this one, whilst it’s good that the police are clamping down on stupidity such as wearing headphones and running red lights,
the other side is that it’s obvious that a broke police force are applying a tax on the people. The police in my town don’t obey the speed limits but seeing as they have no money they have no trouble fining everyone else. I find them quite repulsive as they’re often seen smoking in their police cars and taking a beer whilst on duty. I suppose a little progress is better than nothing.

  8. Stefanjo: yes it’s selective, they have no money, They are desperate and one of the things that they don’t know yet is that they are getting no pension, see Detriot.

  9. Next they’ll be fining children for skateboards or playing ball. Remember those miserable old ‘ankers in the uk that would call the police at just the sight or sound of a child? Thats why i left! Now the rot is spreading here. First the idiotic attitude to cyclists, next ‘young people’, and we’ll finish with nothing but old peoples homes along the coasts…
