MALAGA airport now accounts for 70% of all incoming and outgoing flights in Andalucia.
A total 1.5m passengers passed through the airport in June, a slight increase on the year before. By comparison the second busiest airport was Sevilla, which welcomed 335,257 travellers.
Malaga airport serves around 125 destinations, and 69 companies use it as a base.
Jose Carlos Escribano, president of la Asociación de Empresarios Hoteleros de la Costa del Sol, said: “It´s a basic airport, but nevertheless it is poised to cope with demand both now and in the future, and it promotes the region as a tourist hub.
“The British market is very important to us, and we are working to improve on our German connections, as this is the second most common country of origin of all visitors.
“British and German holidaymakers generally stay a bit longer, an average of seven to ten days, compared to the three or four days Spanish nationals spend here on holiday.”

Just think how many more tourists they’d have in Andalucia (in particular the western end) if the Spanish government would climb down off their high horse & accept the off from Gibraltar to share the use of the Gibraltar airport. That too has a new terminal already set up to allow direct entry to & from Spain.

Sadly I think you’re right but to their loss. I remember the devastating condition of La Linea after Franco closed the gates. If the Spanish government doesn’t climb down, it could get back to that. Who’d be the winner then? Gibraltar would survive as it has under British control for about 300 years either with or without cooperation from Spain.
