THE Spanish government has given the Spanish National Research Council (Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) an emergency €70m injection of cash to save it from imminent bankruptcy.

CSIC employs around 6,000 researchers in more than 120 facilities around the country including those in Sevilla, Granada and Malaga in Andalucia.

The new injection of funds follows an emergency funding package of €25m in June.

On Thursday scientists in the public research sector and universities held a day of mourning for science in Spain.
