BUSINESSES on the Costa del Sol are missing out on free social media marketing, a survey has found.

Out of a 200 enterprise sample, just 36% were found to have a Facebook page, and of those firms just 22% were deemed to be exploiting the social network’s full potential.

Other issues highlighted by marketing firm Pepita Bos included sporadic updates, copyright infringement, and irrelevant content being posted on the page.

  1. No a great surprise really as the Costa del Sol is hardly a hot bed of business brains. You can learn more about how not to run a business as in most cases 70% of business owners are clueless, that’s both foreign & locals.

  2. Is this the same Pepita Bos who started an Internet marketing company (“Spark Your Business”, I recall) in the bustling cyber hotbed of, er, Comares, only for it to fail and go out of business just a few months later? Does that really show expert knowledge of Internet marketing? lol

The Spanish do not use the Internet in the same way as they do in other countries. Also, because the infrastructure is so poor in Spain, and things like online deliveries are handled so very badly, it never gets a foothold. Spanish websites are also totally useless – just look at Amazon.es and EBay.es – enough said.

  3. While I agree with you Fred, things are starting to change. At the beginning of the summer I bought a Weber BBQ online from a garden centre in Catalunya, at a significant discount (including shipping) to the price for the same model at Bricor, and a couple of weeks ago I bought some interesting craft beers from an online shop based in Torremolinos, expensive, but worth it and they arrived properly packaged in under 48 hours.
