SUB-SAHARAN migrants this morning carried out the biggest surge of recent years, into the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

More than 200 migrants scaled the 6m (20ft) high border fence, many suffering cuts and other minor injuries, in the second such crossing in a week.

Officials say that the migrants, many of whom are from Cameroon and Guinea, threw sticks, stones and bottles at police.

The break-in occured at about 6am local time (5am GMT) at Ben-Enzar, a crossing point on the Spain-Morocco border.

The manager of the Melilla migrant reception centre, Carlos Montero, said that the centre was built to hold 480 but is currently housing 1,300 people.

Today’s surge follows similar attempts this month at both Melilla and Ceuta, another Spanish city in North Africa.

The latest border conflict follows recent controversy after reports that border police fired rubber bullets at migrants on February 6, during an attempt in which at least 14 Africans drowned.
