THE Beatles, Shakespeare and the bagpipes filled Mijas this weekend, for a celebration of all things British.

The Foreigners’ Department of Mijas Town Hall joined with the United Kingdom on Saturday for National Friendship Day.

Fish and chips, hog roast, cream teas and bangers and mash were the order of the day, with more than 30 stalls spread out across the pueblo’s main square.

The new British Consul, Charmaine Arbouin, and the mayor of Mijas, Angel Nozal, marked the day by unveiling a plaque outside the tourist office.

Shakespeare also made an appearance with a recital from the actor Robert Michael Maxwell, and Scotland got a look in with a bagpipe performance from Leslie Thompson.

The Costa’s Classic Car Club also handpicked a selection of their favourite British cars.

In a move to develop international relations, Mijas also celebrates Friendship days with Ireland, Sweden and Germany during the year.
