Spain to boost global fight against pirate fishing

SPAIN will commit €250,000 to the global fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU).

The money is being spent on the creation of an international directory of fishing vessels, to drive transparency and accountability in the world’s fishing industry.

The donation is more than half the annual budget of the new register, giving Spanish authorities an important role in guiding the project’s progress.

The central database will contain information on vessels, including name changes, flags and identification markings.

“The Spanish government has given a massive boost to the project,” said Steve Trent, executive director of the Environmental Justice Foundation.

“We now hope that other countries will step up and provide the additional financial support needed.”
Pirate fishing vessels are causing chaos in the world’s fishing industry, as well as damaging fragile marine ecosystems and vulnerable species.

Investigations have shown how illegal fishing vessels escape detection by changing their identities, and ‘flag-hopping’ between open vessel registries.

  1. I hope this includes the spanish government supported fishing fleet and industry because as we all know very well the damage they have done for generations damage that will take hundreds of years to recuperate if at all and I hope that verdemar are exposed for what they really are liers spain should be force to pay compensation for the damage they have done the executive director of enviromental justice foundation should visit a psychiatrist if he believe spain are genuine because this is another of the spanish political tricks

  2. ‘giving Spanish authorities an important role in guiding the project’s progress.’

Ha! Please replace sentence with – ‘giving Spanish authorities an important role in IMPEDING the project’s progress.’

Everyone knows that the Spanish fishing fleets are the biggest rapists of the worlds oceans.

Please don’t treat us all like morons.

  3. Of course, Spain doesn’t worry about spending 250,000, because a) most of it will be coming from the EU and b) it will be going right into the pockets of the biggest pirate fishing fleet in the world – which is Spanish.

It’s a joke to suggest that Spain would combat pirate fishing as they are the biggest culprits of illegal fishing in the World.

  4. All the comments are true, but don’t forget that the biggest pirates in the world history of humanity are all english and holland. London is the capital of all the bussines in piratery. We have to tell all the true.
