POLICE have made nine arrests as part of an investigation into a government training programme scandal – the biggest in the EU – in Malaga and Granada.

Part of ‘Operation Edu’, the arrests are the result of the massive embezzlement investigation in government funds allocated to retraining programmes for the unemployed.

Some €3 billion were allocated for these programmes and estimates speculate an unprecedented €2 billion was taken off the books.

The recent arrests – five in Malaga and four in Granada – were made by the Central Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit (UDEF) as part of their year-long investigation into 17 Malaga companies that received unregulated subsidies in 2010.

“This could be even bigger than the ERE scandal,” mentions sources from UDEF, though they have yet to name the accused.
