SPAIN is being taken to court by the European Commission for two breaches of environmental legislation.

Environment Commissioner Janez Potocnik, wants to see Spain in the EU Court of Justice to rectify the problems.

The first is for poor waste management, due to the numerous landfill sites operating in breach of EU landfill legislation.

The second case concerns the planned rail link between Sevilla and Almeria – for which the environmental impact assessment was deemed inadequate.

Landfill legislation for Europe is in place to stop harm to human health and the surrounding environment, and sites that did not match the standards should have closed down by July 2009.

Spain still has an incredible 28 non-compliant landfill sites operating.

Bulgaria and Slovenia have been taken to court by the Commission over landfill legislation breaches.

  1. FRED ALWAYS comes on this website saying Spain is the ‘worst’ or ‘(any negative phrases here)’

    He actually LIVES here too.

A proper smack in the face to the country that provides all the great things for his Mediterranean lifestyle he obviously likes!

  2. Derek, I enjoy many aspects of Spain but that does not stop Spain being listed by the EUs statistics gathering body as amongst the worst offenders when it comes to ignoring and breaching EU directives. Your tiresome personal vendetta against me shows how weak your logic is, when many other people are saying exactly the same thing but you choose not to mention them. Do you like Spain ignoring the very laws and directives that it signed up to? Duh.

  3. Fred,
just ignore this abusive and tiresome little man – he has never lived in Spain so his abusive comments are irrelevant just like him.

The whole N W coast of Spain is stunningly beautiful and shows just how bland and boring the Med coast is in comparison, just avoid the most toxic site in Europe just north of Gijon. The Spanish government refuses to do anything to clean it up.

  4. Well said Stuart and Fred, the truths need to be aired if only to help those thinking of moving to Spain. Such a pity that this beautiful country of Spain with so much potential does diddly squat about cleaning it’s corrupt and tarnished image.

I cannot think of one positive thing they’ve implemented since their property boom and crash years ago, no regulation whatsoever, then of course the investigation into their leader Rajoy and his cronies got nowhere, ‘B’ money is still the norm, whilst most countries now are corrupt, Spain appears to be the market leader.

Apart from more sun on the Southern Costas Stuart, I never quite understand why so many flock to the highly built up ribbon development along the coast where Spain managed to knock down and slice off lovely hill tops for their sprawling new builds. The North is much prettier.

  5. Angie,
good post. There are many who cannot stand too much sun but know nothing about the north west. I have Dutch friends who on my rec. have holidayed there for some years now.

With climate change increasing every day, soon the north west will have a drier more sunny climate. Even so every July/August Ortigueira (where I used to live) is over run by Madrillanos escaping from the infernal heat of Madrid.

The Ria de Ortigueira is truly breathtaking as are all the northern Rias in Galicia. For surfers and windsurfers the north west coast is a paradise just avoid the coast above Gijon.
