Spanish scientist creates world’s first colour-changing ice cream

LIKE something out of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, a Spanish scientist has created the world’s first colour-changing ice cream.

Creator Manuel Linares – a qualified physician, engineer and mathematician – started taking cooking classes as a stress-combating hobby.

But after tapping into a previously unknown passion he decided to complete an MA in ice cream making, which inspired his ground-breaking invention.

“Everyone laughed, but as a physicist I knew there were various possibilities that might work and I was delighted when I managed to crack it and create an ice cream that changes colour,” said Linares.

The secret to the colour change is the acidity of our saliva and the heat of our tongues, which changes the ice cream from blue to purple to pink as it is eaten.

An explosion of flavours – including strawberry, pistachio, banana, caramel and vanilla – the ice cream is only available in Catalunya for now, but it will hopefully soon make its way to the coast.

  1. You can taste the quality of ice cream in Spain (of course I’m talking the main street outlets, and who knows if they are run by an Italianoutfit?) Not talking about supermarket mass produced tubs or the ice cream vans – yes they are definitely artificial
