POLICE are studying CCTV taken from the Sotogrande restaurant in which a German national was killed with one punch by a British father-of-three.

The footage was finally taken by police from the restaurant on Tuesday, despite the murder at the Spinnaker restaurant taking place on Saturday evening.

Sandro Rottman, 43, was killed by Briton Devinder ‘Victor’ Kainth, 40, after Kainth caught him taking photos of his daughter on an iPad.

Rottman had been previously arrested on January 9, for the alleged possession of child pornography.

One local source who witnessed the incident at the Spinnaker restaurant in the port, told the Olive Press the evening had been going well before the attack.

He revealed that the two men and various friends had been socialising together freely and in good humour for a number of hours before the incident.

The partner of Victor, Gemma Hawkins, and one female friend entered the restaurant with her three children at around 5pm on the Saturday evening.

“The children ran around the restaurant causing chaos and cycled in and out of the restaurant with their bikes while the women ordered a couple of glasses of wine and chatted,” he said.

About an hour later a male friend joined them at their table who is believed to be the partner of Gemma’s friend.

Sandro arrived at a similar time and was seen clearly standing by their table chatting and laughing and Gemma offered him at least one drink.

Sandro paid nothing at all throughout the evening, he added.

Finally around 6.30-7pm Victor arrived and the group continued to chat and everything seemed ‘good humoured’.

“They were definitely not drinking that much as the bill was not that big but they were having fun, and the children were clearly enjoying themselves on their bikes and being like typical noisy children.”

Indeed it was not until about 9.20pm that any trouble broke out, and much of this was captured on CCTV in the restaurant.

“Victor clearly told him no more photos, but this didn’t seem to have worked. Eventually he grabbed the iPad and after seeing two or three photos, bang. It all kicked off.

“Victor threw the iPad on the floor and sent his kids and family out the restaurant and within seconds he returned and punched Sandro, who fell to the ground.”

According to the source the CCTV then doesn’t show what happened next as one of the cameras wasn’t working, but it appears that a number of kicks and punches were then aimed at Sandro who was by then on the floor.”

At 9.30pm the security were called and were on the scene within minutes.

When contacted last night, a member of staff at the restaurant confirmed that police had finally taken the CCTV but insisted he was ‘unable to comment for legal reasons’.

  1. Frightening that the most vital piece of evidence was left out of the control of the investigation for days. If this element of the report is true it shows a level of incompetence beyond belief. The investigating body should be reading these comments and this should form part of their review. The police should also be investigating a camera that seemingly wasn’t working. This may be a genuine fault and of course may not.

  2. The source says Vic looked at 2 or 3 pics. I doubt the source knows what or how many were really seen. Vic had also asked Rottman to stop, but he continued and this raised Vic’s suspicions of something untoward going on. After snatching the ipad, he saw something bad enough to make him react, perhaps pictures of a different nature. Remember Rottman has been found in possession of child pornography only a few weeks ago!

So which father wouldn’t react, if they found pictures of their family, their child, amongst pictures of child pornography? Would you be able to control yourself in that situation?
