IN spite of recent doom and gloom claiming Brit expats in Spain are dwindling in number, the statistics tell another story.brit boom busy costa beach

Spain’s immigration observatory cast a glance over its five million foreign residents at the close of 2014 and concluded that Britons here are growing in number and bucking the general trend.

Foreigners make up 10% of Spain’s population, and although the country lost 183,500 in the crisis, Romanians, Moroccans and the British are currently leading the pack in becoming residents.

With 276,000 British national residents, the expat community is growing fast with an increase of 3.87% on 2013, surpassed only by the relatively small Italian community which grew by 6%.

The majority of Spain’s foreign residents are concentrated in just four of the 17 regions, with a million people putting down roots in Catalonia, 676,000 in Andalucia and other popular destinations including Madrid and Valencia.

  1. Yes, Spain relies on its INE with blind and fervent devotion. A far better way to check foreigners here is either by bank accounts, the electricity company or even the amount of proper tea sold across the counter (joke). The INE says 276,000 – the likely number is probably around 600 to 750 thousand. So often, the Spanish know more about us that we do… without knowing very much at all…

    • Another day, another alias from a zero credibility poster. Spain’s British population would be growing if it was wiped out previously in the mass expat exodus, nothing surprising there. The omission of proper statistics speaks volumes.

  2. Another desperate but nonetheless wind up post from GUAQ the man of in excess of a dozen aliases who posts nothing but doom and gloom about London and the UK’s economy and property markets yet London is where he lives and rents his bookshop.
