Business - Bank borrowingTHOUSANDS of bank accounts could be temporarily closed if account holders fail to provide their bank with an up-to-date digital ID before April 30.

Spaniards must provide a copy of their DNI national identity card, while foreign residents must either provide their residency card or passport.

A law introduced in 2010 gave lenders a five-year deadline to fully digitalise their client records.

Accounts which do not meet the requirements will be blocked on May 1 and will remain blocked until the bank’s records are updated.

It could prove difficult to recover an account if the account holder fails to provide the required documents for a further three months.
