A CAMPAIGN to unify Gibraltar with La Linea as an independent republic is gathering steam on social media. Streamlined-Straits-Solution-for-Gibraltar-Proves-Successful-in-2012

The ‘Referendum adhesion a Gibraltar’ Facebook group has gained 480 likes since it was launched a week ago, stirring up debate on both sides of the border.

The campaign was launched by Spanish La Linea residents who are fed up with being portrayed in the media as a drug trafficking and smuggling route.

They now want to find out how many others would be in favour of turning their back on Madrid and joining with Gibraltar.

“As La Linea residents, we are tired of supporting an old-fashioned situation of confrontation between the UK and Spain,” explains the group Facebook page.

“We are even more tired of the queues and being used as pawns in a strategy game between the two countries.”

The group is calling for a yes/no referendum to be granted on the matter.

  1. Social Media is not the correct method for this sort of campaign, social media should be called “Selfish MeMeMeMedia” as only someone who agrees is allowed to show that agreement. So 400 likes could have 7000 dislikes but only the likes are counted.
“Selfish MeMeMeMedia” is only good for saying “Look at Me”, “Look what I am doing”, “Look at what I am eating” etc etc etc.

  2. I agree with John but admire the thinking of the folks in La Linea who’re clearly being used as a football by their own government. The whole La Linea area has benefited enormously since the frontier was re-opened many years ago as has Spain in general. Masses of folks living in La Linea earn their livings in Gibraltar & pretty well all the major building contracts in Gib are carried out by Spanish contractors & crews not to speak of all the supplies & goods delivered from Spain into Gibraltar. But that’s not enough to satisfy the central government who want to take the place over & call it their own. Because they can’t, they upset thousands of their own people. Enough, we all know the story & until Madrid backs off, there will continue to be hassle for everyone in that corner of the peninsular.
