THE emissions scandal enveloping German motoring giant Volkswagen is to have a ‘grave’ knock-on effect on Spain’s car sector.

VW subsidiary SEAT is under scrutiny from Spain’s government with up to 500,000 altered engines allegedly being installed in Spanish cars.

Parent company VW is at risk of going bankrupt as it faces a €24 billion-law suit for lying about emission levels, with 900,000 cars recalled in the USA.

SEAT has admitted that it had equipped some vehicles with the Volkswagen EA189 engine in question.

An urgent meeting between 28 member states within the EU’s industry commission has now been called with Volkswagen a predominant car manufacturer – and job provider – across the continent.

A total of 11 million VW cars worldwide have been fitted with the controversial programme that manipulates its output of polluting gases.

The company’s CEO Martin Winterkorn quit on Wednesday afternoon amid intense criticism.

  1. It’s not just VW, they are all at it. Emissions, mileage claims, safety features. All thundering lies.
Governments collude with motor manufacturers in this fake testing regime. Governments, just to look good, set “standards” they know full well cannot be met with present technology, then sit back and watch while fake testing takes place. Diesel emissions are the greatest hidden scandal of all, with authorities scratching their heads at the amount of pollution in our cities, pretending they don’t know where it all comes from, because, according to the standards set and supposedly met, there’s loads more crap in the air than would be possible if that scenario had been true.

  2. stefanjo,
I read an article in the Guardian yesterday that blew the lid of the totally fraudulent government controlled labs that test these cars and this applies across the whole of Europe. Did you also see that in the USA they deliberately shelved a report that showed that American cars are less safe than those made in Europe.
So the UK is going to retest all diesel cars sold in the UK. Will this be bog standard cars tested on real roads – I doubt it.

So VW workers across Europe are going to lose jobs over this but what will happen to the VW managers who set this fraudulent up – a nice golden parachute – 5/1 on – at least.

  3. VW workers blew the whistle on this scam in 2007 – nobody listened to them. The EU knew in 2011 but did nothing. Time to dissolve the totally corrupt EU and create another organisation that represents first, the interests of a healthy environment and then a sensible distribution of agricultural production and to totally control big business in the interests of the 99% – rational democracy is always better than thinly disguised Fascism.
