SPAIN will seek co-sovereignty of Gibraltar following Britain’s vote to Leave the EU.
Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo claims the ‘Spanish flag on the Rock is much closer’ following Brexit.
He said ‘everything is up for grabs’ in the unprecedented vote.
“It’s a complete change of outlook that opens up new possibilities on Gibraltar not seen for a very long time,” he said. “The formula of co-sovereignty – to be clear, the Spanish flag on the Rock – is much closer than before.”
Gibraltarians voted overwhelming in favour of staying in the EU, with around 99% of voters rejecting Brexit.
Spain is now likely to push for Gibraltar to stay out of any general negotiations with the EU.
