IN DEEP WATER: Rajoy

Mariano RajoyIT seems that in Spain, local government means lucrative pay.

A total of 17 heads of municipal, provincial, and autonomous community governments earn more than acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy… likely without having half of the headaches.

While Rajoy struggles to claw together enough support to form a government, the healthy handful of Spain’s local politicians are contentedly counting their paychecks.

Catalunya’s autonomous community leader Cales Puigdemont tops the earnings list with a net salary of €145,471, 84% higher than Rajoy’s salary of €78,967.

Politicians from Catalunya and Madrid make up the top five earners, while Basque Country local leaders hold five spots on the list, the most of any autonomous community.
