PRIME Minister Theresa May has confirmed Britain will trigger article 50 by March 2017.

Once triggered, a two-year countdown to Britain leaving the EU will be set in motiontheresa-may.

May confirmed there would be no deal on immigration to secure access to the single market.

May also announced the government’s plan for a ‘Great Repeal Bill’ to overturn the 1972 European Communications Act, which binds Britain to EU law.

May said: “This is about delivering for the British people, and this is not just about leaving the EU, it’s about that essential question of the trust people have in their politicians.

“The people have spoken, we will deliver on that.

“We’ll be starting the negotiations once we’ve triggered article 50, but I think it’s important to get the right deal for the British people.”

She added: “It’s important for us to set this out now so that we have the timing, so that when we leave the European Union there is a smooth transition.

“I think that’s important for us all, for particularly for the economy and for business.”

The two-year countdown to Brexit could be extended if Britain can come to an agreement with EU members, although this is unlikely.

  1. This should have been triggered the day after the vote was counted. There are no negotiations to be had with Europe. The Dutch, Germans, French etc need our trade as much as we need their trade. Britain will be 33 million net richer per week once we are free of this post war fascism.
