Five arrested for allegedly stealing 4,000 kilos of oranges in cars in Sevilla

SEVILLA police officers have arrested five people carrying 4,000 kilos of oranges jammed into the back of a saloon car.

The police were notified after the shipping town of Carmona reported a theft of large quantities of oranges that were packed in sacks.

Suspicions were raised after three cars, that were lined up behind one another, made a ‘sharp’ manoeuvre to escape the city.

A van, in which a couple was travelling with their adult son, was found to be loaded with the citrus fruit, the other car had two brothers who said they were tourists.

While the other cars were found to contain a similar quantity of oranges.

The group claim they had ‘come from very far away’ and had been ‘picking up oranges from the ground’ for their own consumption.
