| Dear Olive Press readers, Welcome back to the weekly round-up of what’s been going on not just in the world of news in Spain, but also in the world of your venerable expat newspaper – 20 years young this year. | | We have, once again, blasted out another edition of our new national newspaper, choc full of incisive investigations, cutting edge coverage and important news affecting English-speaking immigrants in Spain. | | | Latest Edition of The Olive Press | | | | | More excitingly, copies of the paper are hitting the streets in Barcelona for the first time. Spain’s second city – arguably its most dynamic and international – is a hotbed of intrigue, politics and polemics and we look forward to covering it in ever greater detail. | | It means we now have correspondents in almost all Spain’s vital pulse points – Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Madrid and Barcelona, plus more than a few willing volunteers. | | Spain’s demographics are a hot topic at the moment with the news that the country now hosts 10 million foreign-born residents. One interesting observation is how these immigrant groups divide themselves out around the country. In Barcelona, foreign early 30-somethings actually outnumber the locals, while in Marbella there are significantly more expat over-55s than natives. Not so much a minority anymore. | | Going to the beach on the Costa del Sol could soon entail seeing an offshore windfarm on the horizon. Proposals have been submitted to build 55 giant wind turbines just 25km to 40km from the shoreline. The development – which would be Spain’s first foray into offshore energy generation – would have a significant impact on the Alboran Sea and Strait of Gibraltar. | | We’re all hoping that we’ve got through the unusually long violent storm phase of Spain’s increasingly erratic seasons. Now that it’s over, it all seems like it was worthwhile, with reservoir levels so replenished. One of the happiest stories is the recovery of La Viñuela, Malaga’s largest reservoir. At just 7% capacity and in danger of literally drying up just two years ago, it has now roared back to over 80% full. | | Brits with dual citizenship might want to sit up and take notice of this one. It seems that the UK Home Office has sprung a surprise, and enacted new rules that will require them to present their British passport when entering the country, or a tortuous document if they don’t have it with them. Could be the source of many headaches. | | Have a great weekend all, | | | | | | | Edificio Centro Comercial El Duque, first floor, Carretera N340, km 144.5 | | San Luis de Sabinillas, Malaga 29692, Spain | | Copyright © 2025 The Olive Press, All rights reserved. | | | |
