Dog walkers on Spain’s Costa del Sol will be fined if they don’t carry soapy water with them when out in public

DOG owners in Benalmadena will have to carry a bottle of soapy water with them when they take their dogs out for walks, or risk being fined.

The new rule is intended to prevent bad smells from dog urine on street pavements.

HELPING HAND: Mayor Victor Navas distributing water bottles

Mayor of Benalmadena, Victor Navas, said the new rule would ensure the resort town was the ‘cleanest city’ possible.

Navas delivered free bottles of water to people in Benalmadena yesterday, to raise awareness of the new rule.

“We live in a city with lots of sunny days. Urine dries quickly on public highways if it is not diluted, causing bad odors,” he said.

He added: “We all have to be responsible and respectful when living together.”
