SINNER: Priest Juan de Jesus Baez

A BRITISH vicar has caused a Spanish priest to commit sacrilege and sparked off a religious row, after taking communion at a Catholic church.

Reverend Jenny Lancaster, a retired Church of England vicar, was invited to take part in the Eucharist by Juan de Jesus Baez, a parish priest in the rural Andalucian town of Alora.

However, after photos of the Newcastle-based vicar holding a chalice appeared online, the Mexican-born parish priest was scolded by his bosses at the Diocese of Malaga.

In a statement released on Tuesday, they said: “Catholic priests and ministers of non-Catholic churches or religious communities can’t both take part in the celebration of the Eucharist.”

Jesus Baez was forced to issue a grovelling apology in which he confessed to committing a sin.

“I am very repentant. I ask for forgiveness from God and the Church. I am surprised by all the upset it has caused; I have unwittingly sinned,” he said.

He added: “I am very fond of  Reverend Jenny. She is a woman of God.”

The retired Anglican vicar has a holiday home in Alora and is well-known in the local area.

She had previously attended a communion at the Roman Catholic Iglesia de la Encarnacion in 2017 without anyone noticing the sin.

  2. Que problema? According to the Bible fairy tales, Luke 22:19 has the Big Man saying “do this in remembrance of me” having broke a lump of bread and dished it out to the lads. No mention of any special people doing it or receiving it. These frock-wearing “Chosen ones” make it up as they go along. Sin? My A**e !
