Voters snub Alhambra palace as new7wonder

THE Alhambra palace has failed in its attempt to be chosen as one of the seven modern wonders of the world.

Instead, the 13th century Muslim monument – the most visited tourist attraction in Spain in 2006 – finished eighth behind the Great Wall of China, the ancient city of Petra in Jordan and the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Completing the list of the seven modern wonders of the world are the Lost City of Machu Picchu in Peru, the pre-Hispanic city of Chichén Itza in Columbia and the Colosseum in Rome.

The Indian mausoleum of the Taj Mahal was the final monument to be chosen.

Members of the public voted for their seven choices from a list of 20. This was soon reduced to 19 when the Pyramids of Giza – the only existing original wonder of the world – withdrew from the contest.

The results were announced in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon on July 7. This date was chosen because of its significance to the number seven.
