Torrox

It’s official: Malaga resort of Torrox has Europe’s best climate

THE sign that greets you as you enter the resort could be dismissed as a piece of shameless self-promotion.

But Torrox can indeed claim to have the best climate in Europe – and have the paperwork to back it up.

A study of 21 Mediterranean municipalities, all of whom make a similar statement, has found that the weather of the town cannot be bettered anywhere on the continent.

The report – which was compiled over six years by weather forecast company MeteoGroup – concluded that the geographic location of Torrox resulted in excellent year round temperatures.

With it being open to the sea to the south and surrounded by mountains to the north, the resort’s average annual temperature is 18 degrees Celsius.

“Mother Nature has been kind to Torrox. As it is in the Rio Torrox Valley, it benefits from a good maritime climate while being sheltered by the Almijara mountain range from northerly winds,” said Salud Alonso, a MeteoGroup spokeswoman.

Between 2001 and 2007, average summer temperatures did not exceed a warm 27C. In other towns that took part in the study, such as Almeria, Alicante and Valeta in Malta, temperatures during the same period were often greater than 30C.

The average minimum temperature over the six-year period was 15C, while the lowest recorded was 3.7C.

Torrox also had the third lowest rainfall of the 21 towns and villages that took part in the study, with an average of 54 wet days a year.
