Fire threatens natural park

TEN hectares of protected park land was destroyed after a fire in the Sierra de Alhama, Tejeda y Almijara Natural Park.
More than 70 agents from Infoca, the regional government’s fire specialists, and 12 water aeroplanes were needed to extinguish the blaze, which destroyed pine trees and scrub land in the Llanos de Alpanta area of the park close to the town of Arenas del Rey.

It is believed the fire started shortly after 18.15 on July 3 and was brought under control at 21.00.

Experts are investigating the cause of the blaze.
