On Saturday October 15, the Paseo del Parque through to Alameda Principal in Malaga filled with protesters of all ages, eager to have their voices heard and to be part of a strong and peaceful movement calling upon the government for change in Spain, known as the 15 M Movement or the “Spanish Revolution”.
According to The Guardian, more than 950 protests were held in over 80 countries, demonstrating against corporate greed and the global financial system. Angered by the repeated bail outs of banks, the faltering economy and inequality, Spain took to the streets to finally take a stand. With the economy rapidly deteriorating in Spain and unemployment reaching record high, shocking figures showing that over 40% of young people are currently unemployed, it is little wonder that hundreds of individuals took part in the demonstration in central Malaga last Saturday.
“This is a movement of change”, said one protestor, “Economic change, social change, educational change and a call for more opportunities. This is for a better future in Spain, it is the spanish revolution against the injustice of the system”.
Among drums, singing, dancing, chanting and homemade banners, individuals joined forces to call upon the government and the financial elite for equality across Spain and better opportunities for it’s people. Despite obvious anger towards politicians, the protest took place without disturbance, leaving little for the police to do except divert cars from the main road that played host to the throngs of spaniards united in their hunger for change.
An on duty member of the local Policia at the scene of the protest showed his support for the movement, saying; “For me, it is positive. This is important for the people”.
The demonstration was inspiring to say the least, lighting up central Malaga and lifting the spirits of those who have felt that injustice has reigned in Spain for long enough.
