Catalonia to hold independence referendum on October 1

CATALONIA has vowed to hold an independence referendum on October 1.

President of the region Carles Puigdemont said Catalans will be asked to answer yes or no to a single question: “Do you want Catalonia to become an independent state in the form of a republic?”

The Spanish government in Madrid has said it will block any attempt to divorce the region from the rest of the country.

Prime minister Mariano Rajoy, has yet to comment on the announcement but has previously said he would not recognise the vote.

The Spanish government’s spokesman, Inigo Mendez de Vigo, said: “That referendum will not take place because it is illegal.

“We are facing an increasingly radical strategy that has less and less support.

“Any move that evolves from an announcement to a fact will be appealed by the government.”

Catalan voters were last asked for their views on independence in an informal ballot in 2014, which showed more than 80% supported leaving Spain, although turnout was low.

  1. Absolutely love all this rebellion, but from interest sake, where exactly is the border between Catalunya and the rest of the World?
Seem to remember some of this territory, was once part of France. How would that work?

    • In the case that you mention, there will be a problem of definition of borders,as ussually happens with the nationalist movements, that seek for the predominance of his nations against others. Firstly, the catalan nationalist want the inclusion in the independent Catalonia of the so called by them “the Catalan Countries”; countries where they say that people speak Catalan, wich are Valencian Comunity , Balearic Islands, and a small part of Aragon. Probably there will be necessary to include the Comunity of Murcia, wich was reconquered in the XII century by the kingdon of Aragon.

Equaly will be necessary to include the Rosellon and Cerdanya in the South East of France, because this countries belonged to the County of Barcelona till the XVII, moment in which this territories were given to France because the end of the Thirteen Years War. I´m not sure If Provence must be included too.

I do not know if in the case of to achieve this territorial goals, the nationalists will demand to recover the dominance of Naples and Sicily ,Sardinia , and Athens, al these antique territories of the Aragon Crown.

  2. As a British expat, living in Catalunya I am being taken out of the EU with the brexit vote and if that fails I might be taken out with the Catsit vote, well that’s life isn’t it.

With respect to the totality of the territories of the Roman Empire , in my opinion there will be no revindications, though that some nationalist intelectuals claim that Rome were created by Catalans, and equally with respect all America, excepting Brasil, that according with these intelectual were discovered and colonizated by Catalans but in short time after it were stolen to them by the perfidious Castellanos

    • But will there be a Great Wall and will Catalunya pay for it? There’ll be plenty jobs for brickies, could buck the economy up. (Not that Castilians are very fond of hard graft)
