Tourist, 68, collapses and dies amid orange-level heat warning on Spain’s Costa Blanca

A 68-year-old man tragically died yesterday afternoon after suffering a heart attack on the Costa Blanca.

The victim, believed to be a foreign tourist, was reportedly standing on the shore of Moraira’s l’Ampolla beach when he collapsed.

Beachgoers were left stunned as lifeguards rushed to the stricken bather, initiating CPR and calling for backup.

Despite the swift response of lifeguards and emergency medical services, the man could not be revived.

A punishing heatwave has seen red weather alerts put out for some eastern regions of Spain

Paramedics from Teulada Moraira Civil Protection and a specialised medical team from SAMU quickly arrived on the scene, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

It comes as parts of Spain have been placed under a red weather alert due to extreme temperatures.

The mercury is set to comfortably surpass 40C in many parts of the country, with some areas predicting highs of 44C.

Official weather agency Aemet has placed Zaragoza, Ampurdan (next to Girona) and Hellin y Almansa, near Alicante, all on a red warning for heat.

It means there is serious risk to life in these areas, with the mercury to near the mid 40s.

Meanwhile, the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca are on yellow and orange alerts, where Aemet’s forecast does not rule out highs of above 40C.
