STORMS that hit the Costa Blanca on Wednesday have caused a string of delays plus two cancellations to services arriving at Alicante-Elche airport.

16 inbound flights have been delayed so far along with two cancelled services from Palma de Mallorca that were due to land at around 5.30pm.

Domestic services from Barcelona and Madrid airports are seeing delays of between 30 and 50 minutes.

One plane from Madrid had to be diverted south to Almeria airport along with a service from Liverpool.

The return journeys from Alicante-Elche airport have as a result been cancelled.

As flight routes are altered to avoid the predicted storms, delays are ranging from between 90 minutes to almost four hours on international routes.

Services from Bologna, Hamburg, and London have been amongst those hit.

Elsewhere in Alicante province, a commuter train between Callosa de Segura and Orihuela City was derailed after hitting a fallen tree.

Nobody was injured and passengers on the Alicante-bound service were transferred to another train.

There have been no serious weather-related incidents reported so far in the region.
