Popular Mallorca town swamped with tourists who now outnumber residents

SOLLER’s town council say it is buckling under the strain of tourism, with visitors now outnumbering residents in the popular Mallorcan town.

The local council has warned that the picturesque destination is facing ‘structural tourism pressure’ as growing visitor numbers place mounting stress on housing, infrastructure and public services.

According to a newly released council report, there are 75 tourist accommodation places for every 100 residents in Soller –  one of the highest ratios on the island.

The report also revealed that the town welcomed more than 200,000 visitors in 2024, the equivalent of 14.4 tourists for every resident.

Most arrivals were concentrated between April and October, when the seasonal influx, alongside day-trippers from other parts of the island, causes the town’s population to swell and tourists regularly outnumber locals.

The town council are now proposing a redevelopment plan to improve infrastructure and public services.

Their proposed plan involves an investment of €38 million and would involve the modernisation of tourist accommodation, urban regeneration projects, and environmental and landscape improvements over the next four years.
