TWO-TIME champion Carlos Alcaraz will not return to Wimbledon this year, citing a persistent wrist injury that has already forced him to skip this month’s French Open.
“My recovery is going well and I’m feeling much better, but unfortunately I’m still not ready to compete, which is why I have to withdraw from the grass-court swing at Queen’s and Wimbledon,” the former world number one wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.
“They are two truly special tournaments for me and I will miss them a lot. We’ll keep working to come back as soon as possible.”
The 23-year-old was gearing up for the busy clay and grass seasons but injured himself during a straight-sets first-round victory over Otto Virtanen at the Barcelona Open last month.
Less than two weeks later, he ruled himself out of returning to Roland Garros, where he is a two-time defending champion after last year’s scarcely believable comeback 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (10-2) final victory over arch rival Jannik Sinner.
Murcia-born Alcaraz is also a two-time champion at SW19 after consecutive victories in 2023 and 2024.
He lost out in last year’s final to Italian star Sinner, the current world number one.
Earlier this year, Alcaraz became the youngest-ever male player to complete a career Grand Slam, breaking an 87-year-old record set by Don Budge in 1938, thanks to a three-sets-to-one victory over the great Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open.
