A REMATCH of the Euro 2024 final could be on the cards after Spain usurped expectations to cruise past tournament favourites France and book a spot in Sunday’s World Cup final.
La Roja went into the match in Dallas as the underdogs, with France widely fancied to reach a third consecutive World Cup final after swatting aside Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco in style during the knockout stages.
But Spain showed exactly why they are reigning European champions, nullifying Les Bleus’ star-studded forward line and mounting a formidable attack of their own.
Luis de la Fuente’s side controlled the game from start to finish, with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal, courtesy of a penalty won by 19-year-old Lamine Yamal, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Perro sealing a dominant 2-0 victory.
In truth, the scoreline flattered France, who brought the curtain down on coach Didier Deschamps’s reign with a whimper.
Spain will find out their opponents in the final in New York tomorrow evening, when England battle it out against Argentina in Atalanta.
A win for the Three Lions would set-up a rematch of the Euro final in Berlin two years ago.
On that occasion, goals from Nico Williams and Oyarzabal broke English hearts as Spain won 2-1.
