TWO helicopters are currently helping firefighters battle a blaze that has broken out near Estepona on Sunday afternoon, sending a plume of smoke across the coast.
Plan INFOCA, the Andalucia regional forest-fire service that coordinates helicopters, ground crews and water tankers, declared the blaze at 2.59pm in the Rio Padron area, on the A7 corridor near Cancelada, between Estepona and Marbella.
One light and one medium helicopter are joined by 20 ground crew and two fire engines also in the fight.
INFOCA has confirmed that it is an urban rather than forest, meaning it had broken out among buildings and roadside infrastructure rather than in woodland.
It confirmed it was working alongside the Malaga Provincial Fire Consortium, the council fire brigade that normally handles building and urban blazes rather than INFOCA’s usual forest-fire remit.
Drivers passing the scene posted photos and video of the flames and smoke, visible as far away as Cancelada and the Selwo Aventura theme park.
No casualties, evacuations or property damage have been officially confirmed as crews continue to tackle the blaze.
