SPAIN has been warned to prepare for a new heat dome next week that will bring sweltering temperatures of up to 40C to major expat hotspots.
Forecasters using the European weather model say a massive ‘heat dome’ will trap a mass of extremely hot air over the Iberian Peninsula starting from Sunday, August 10.
An Atlantic cold air depression off the European coast will drive a subtropical ridge and southerly wind flow over Spain, locking in the heat for the entire week.
The blistering weather will affect broad swathes of the country, with temperatures between 36C and 38C expected on Monday in Andalucia, Mallorca, Catalunya, Madrid, Extremadura, interior Murcia, southern Galicia, and the southern meseta.
Specific forecast maximums for Monday include 40C in Cordoba, 37C in Sevilla and Madrid, 38C in Zaragoza, 35C in Palma, 31C in Barcelona, and a cooler 28C in Oviedo.
By Tuesday, temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 40C across the Guadalquivir valley and the Ebro valley.
Central regions and the mesetas will see values between 35C and 39C, with yellow weather alerts guaranteed.
The Cantabrian coast will be an exception to the sweltering conditions, with maximums remaining below 30C in nearly all provincial capitals.
The high-pressure system will also bring anomalies of 3C to 6C above average across much of central Europe, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
It comes after AEMET confirmed that June and July formed the hottest two-month period in Spain since record-keeping began in 1961.
The previous record averages set in 2022 and 2025 have already been surpassed this summer.
