A MURDER investigation is underway after an Irish couple were found dead inside the jacuzzi of their rented holiday home in Valencia.
The man, 50, and woman, 45, were discovered by their two teenage children, aged 14 and 16, on Tuesday afternoon in the popular coastal resort of Cullera.
A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil told the Olive Press that the deaths were ‘startling’ and ‘not at all common’, prompting the force’s Judicial Homicide Unit to take charge of the investigation.
Although the cause of death has yet to be identified, the couple were found naked and with ‘injuries that appeared to be caused by a sharp object’, according to local newspaper Las Provincias.
The family had been staying at a villa in Cap Blanc, one of Cullera’s most exclusive residential areas on the slopes of Faro mountain.
After discovering their parents’ bodies, the teenagers raised the alarm with the owner of the property, who quickly alerted emergency services.
The youngsters, who do not speak Spanish and reportedly have special needs, are said to be traumatised by the discovery.
A social worker and psychologist from Cullera Town Hall’s social services department are now caring for the siblings while the Guardia Civil attempts to locate relatives of the deceased couple in Ireland.
The bodies were transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Valencia late on Tuesday, with autopsies due to be carried out on Wednesday to establish the cause and circumstances of the deaths.
Cullera, located around 40km south of the city of Valencia, is a major tourist destination, with its population soaring from around 25,000 to approximately 150,000 during the peak summer months.
