TWO people have died at a care home on the Costa del Sol after a lift carrying elderly residents suddenly plunged 50ft to the ground.
Four other people were critically injured in the horrifying incident at the Seniors residence on Calle Alcalde Santiago Valle in Velez-Malaga.
Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 8.40pm on Wednesday evening, with all six victims initially rescued alive from the lift before being taken to hospital.
An 82-year-old woman died shortly after arriving at hospital, while a 91-year-old man succumbed to his injuries during the early hours of Thursday.
The four surviving victims – two women aged 69 and 78 and two men aged 68 and 86 – remain in intensive care with fractures and other injuries to their arms and legs.
Firefighters, emergency medical teams and officers from the Policia Local and Policia Nacional worked to rescue the group, who were trapped in the crumpled lift.
“Six people were rescued from inside the elevator and after they were taken to hospital it was confirmed two of them have died,” a spokesperson for the Policia Nacional said.
Investigators have launched a probe to establish what caused the lift to plunge.
The residence, which has around 200 places for elderly residents and is partly funded through an agreement with the Junta de Andalucia, said it was examining the lift system alongside the manufacturer, adding that it was too early to draw any conclusions.
