A MAN has died after being shot during a street fight in La Linea, the Spanish town just across the border from Gibraltar.

The 53-year-old was hit by at least one bullet at around 5am on Saturday in Calle Virgen de la Almudena, in the Las Palomeras neighbourhood.

His family say he was riding his bike past the fight and had nothing to do with it, and that a stray bullet killed him. Police have not established any link between the man and criminal activity.

Early reports said he had both gunshot and knife wounds. His family deny that he was stabbed.

The incident caused a stir at La Linea’s hospital early on Saturday morning.

The National Police have opened an investigation. Officers are still gathering information about what happened and have released few details. No arrests have been reported.

The shooting will cause alarm on both sides of the border, since thousands of people cross between La Linea and Gibraltar every day for work.
