Eta extortion letters demand 400,000 euros

by

SEPARATIST group Eta has sent out extortion letters to Basque businesspeople demanding “economic help.”

The letters, written in both Spanish and Basque, were sent to regional companies in late July asking for 400,000 euros in 20, 50 and 100-euro notes.

“While the fight lasts, Basque citizens are being asked to give money towards our political infrastructure and to fund our foreign-based military,” the letter read, according to press agency Efe.

The letter concludes by stating: “If you do not respond to this letter, you give Eta no option but to take action against you.”

The letters were condemned by the Institute of Basque Businesses, whose spokesman called them “an unacceptable and intolerable threat of terrorism.”

A spokesman for the government said: “This is a dire situation. We recommend those that receive the letters immediately inform the police.”
