Salamanca becomes latest university in Spain to face closure due to COVID-19 fears

AFTER the closure of Granda university on October 13, other higher education institutions now must consider the suspension of face to face teaching.

Salamanca’s regional health minister Veronica Casado has blamed their surge in cases, which places the city at risk of confinement, on the ‘bad behaviour’ of university students.

The University of Salamanca has expelled 75 students for organising an open bar party.

But, despite a surge in coronavirus positives, the institution was keen to point out their case numbers are lower than in other student communities.

“It’s not as high as in other universities such as Granada or the Catalan ones,” said the university.

However, they confirmed they will temporarily switch to online teaching and will launch a virtual campus platform ‘should the situation require it.’.
