Spain’s longest-serving prisoner a free man at last

THIS time it is not a hoax.

Spain’s longest serving common prisoner has finally been released.

Miguel Montes Neiro, 61, who has been almost continually behind bars since 1976 for a string of non-violent crimes, has gone home to his family.

“Life has passed by me and I haven’t started living yet,” said a visibly moved Neiro, who met his sisters and daughters at the gates of Albalote prison. “I feel free, I am not vermin.”
