50,000 cigarettes seized at Gibraltar’s Eastern Beach

SOME 50,000 cigarettes have been seized by Gibraltar’s HM Customs at Eastern Beach.

Customs officers intercepted eight men running towards the frontier fence at the northern end of Eastern Beach Road carrying 250 cartons of cigarettes.

When challenged, the men discarded their load and fled into the sea to swim towards Spain. They were met on a Spanish beach and detained by Civil Guards who were supporting the operation.

A Customs investigation into the incident is ongoing.
