Dozens of flights cancelled in Spain due to snow and bad weather

MORE than two dozen flights have been cancelled in Spain’s Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport today due to the snowfall since 12pm today.

There are expected to be further delays as from 2.15pm it is operating with three runways only and will be spacing out scheduled flights for security reasons.

Two lanes were closed between 12.30 am and 2pm to carry out cleaning and deicing tasks.

At 2.15pm a third runway was reopened.

The meteorological incidence has generated delays in Barajas but at the moment there is no knowing of the ripple effects it could have on other aiports in Spain.

This situation of cold and snow is likely to continue for the next few days in the region, and for this reason Aena has activated the Winter Plan with which they carry out prevention work on tracks ‘so that the snow does not freeze or accumulate’.
