Huge fire near motorway in Spain’s Marbella controlled after 40 homes evacuated

BURNING: Onlookers watch a huge fire near the AP-7 motorway, which began last night but has now been controlled

A HUGE fire in Marbella has been controlled after 40 homes were evacuated.

The blaze ignited yesterday at around 8:20pm near the AP-7 motorway and Bello Horizonte urbanization.

Firefighters had controlled the fire by 8am this morning, although around 20 personnel were still on the scene.

Originally 70 agents had responded, along with five pumper vehicles, while the flames could be seen as far as Puerto Banus.

AP-7: Drivers were left shocked after the fire broke out close to the motorway

The fire did not spread quickly due to a terrain of low scrub and few trees, combined with the disused motocross track that acted as a barrier.

Marbella Mayor Angeles Muñoz helped to coordinate response teams near the site of the fire.

Meanwhile, only one person is known to have been hospitalised following the incident – a Policia Nacional officer who was treated for smoke inhalation.

People from the 40 houses evacuated in the Bello Horizonte urbanization have now begun to return home.

The fire came just 24 hours after a fire in Estepona had been controlled, a blaze which evicted 2,000 people from their homes and torched an area of around 330 hectares.
